The Illinois River meanders slowly through the valley, surrounded by the distant mountain peaks of three mountain ranges.  Tall willows grow in the moist soil along the river.

The Refuge is made up of ten land tract purchases and exchanges with the Bureau of Land Management and the State of Colorado. Since the first land acquisition, Refuge staff has used the existing irrigation infrastructure of the original ranches to create new wetland habitat for the benefit of migratory birds.
