The greater prairie chicken is one of a number of bird species and other wildlife that inhabit John W. and Louise Seier National Wildlife Refuge.

John and Louise were brother and sister. They wanted to make sure the land was preserved for wildlife and for future generations to enjoy. The land was willed to the National Wildlife Refuge System in 1999.
