Lost Trail National Wildlife Refuge is located in Pleasant Valley. This valley was formed during the Pleistocene by glacial and sedimentation activity.

In 1999, MPC transferred approximately 3,100 acres of the ranch to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Service purchased the remaining acreage from MPC under the authority of the Migratory Bird Conservation Act.
