Yukon Flats and Becherof National Monuments are established by President Jimmy Carter under the Antiquities Act of 1906. Within a few months, both monuments are re-designated as national wildlife refuges by an Act of Congress. |

Passage of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act dramatically increases the size of the National Wildlife Refuge System, adding nine new refuges, expanding seven existing refuges, adding more than 53 million acres of land, and designating numerous wilderness areas. |
