The nearly 2,000-acre Funk Waterfowl Production Area, part of the Rainwater Basin Wetland Management District in south-central Nebraska, has improved visitor access. Today, visitors can walk the six-mile network of trails atop the dikes and see native wildlife, including migrating ducks, geese and other birds. New, low windows in an observation blind make it easy for people using wheelchairs to watch wildlife.
Parking lots are available at various points along the trail network, which has been widened to accommodate school buses. The improvements will help bird watchers, who flock to Funk WPA during spring migration. Waterfowl migration is at its peak in early March; April and May bring migrating shorebirds, then the songbirds and waders that will nest in the area during summer.
The Refuge System has 37 Wetland Management Districts, which include thousands of Waterfowl Production Areas, generally open to the public during daylight hours. Funk WPA is about 11 miles south and one mile east of the I-80 Odessa exit in Nebraska.
