Southwest Fire Manager Recognized for Leadership (July 7, 2004)
Southwest Wildland Urban Interface Coordinator Curtis Heaton from Buenos Aires NWR, AZ, received the Paul Gleason Lead by Example Award for his leadership in providing educational and development opportunities for future leaders.
Heaton was recognized for initiative and innovation in fire management leadership, having fostered the After-Action Review concept and assisting with development of leadership curriculum. He also helped create two Leadership Toolbox references on the Wildland Fire Leadership Web site www.fireleadership.gov.
The Web site was created in 2002 to help wildland firefighters improve their essential leadership skills at all stages of their careers. It includes information on training courses as well as the Leadership Toolbox, including recommended reading, a crew cohesiveness assessment, suggests for team building, and more.
The newly established award by the interagency National Wildfire Coordinating Group is named for Paul Gleason, a well-known leader in the wildland fire community. It recognizes outstanding leadership in fire managemenr.
