Thousands will Celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week October 9-15, 2005
From kayaking tours and nature walks to photography exhibits and children's activities, events across the country will bring thousands of Americans to their national wildlife refuges during National Wildlife Refuge Week, October 9-15.
Refuge Week is a chance for the country's 545 national wildlife refuges to showcase their contributions to the conservation and recovery of wildlife and wildlife habitat, as well as their opportunities for outdoor recreation and appreciation of the natural world. The Refuge System's approximately 100 million acres are home to 700 species of birds, 220 species of mammals, and more than 1,000 species of fish, and countless invertebrates, plants, reptiles and amphibians.
At Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, NM, visitors on October 15 will be able to go on a backcountry tour about geology and native plants. They can take boat tours October 8 at White River National Wildlife Refuge, AR.
Refuge visitors can also explore the beach ecology of Bulls Island and the lighthouses of Lighthouse Island at Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, SC, on October 16; and take dolphin and sealife cruises as part of the week-long "Ding Darling Days" October 9-15 at Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, FL.
The 40th anniversary of the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge will be commemorated October 8 in Minnesota, and a Ranching Heritage Day October 15 will celebrate the history of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, OR.
