Fish Gotta Swim, Birds Gotta Fly at Savannah NWR, Georgia

This pilot project will allow 60 - 75 middle school students from three Chatham County public schools to explore the impact of salt-water intrusion associated with proposed harbor modifications on the tidal freshwater wetlands of the Savannah National Wildlife Refuges (SNWR). Emphasizing hands-on, student-centered learning, this series of six alternating classroom sessions and field trips introduces students to the flora and fauna of SNWR, and engages students in scientific inquiry – sharpening skills such as observing, inquiring and investigating, predicting and inferring.

Through an interdisciplinary approach, this program addresses and average of 40% of Georgia's standards for science and social studies in grades 7 and 8. The summarizing 'town meeting' gives students the opportunity to integrate their experiences and research data, while practicing skills of information processing, problem solving and civic participation. Students will develop a greater apperception of the value of the SNWR, and will be better prepared to make and defend choices, which support and protect it in the future.
