Sacramento Stewards
During an actual visit to the refuge, called Conservation Week, students actively apply their classroom knowledge. This week-long visit coincides with the annual migration of Snow Geese, providing wonderful viewing and learning opportunities in the fields of science, math, history, and the language arts as well. The planting of willows and other wetland species occur annually in the spring as part of community stewards projects.
Over the past seven years, the Sacramento Stewards program has grown from one grade to whole school participation. Moreover, the California site is now working with Hank Marsh Junior High School as a possible new Stewards site. This potential site has applied for a challenge grant from the California Waterfowl Association (CWA).
