Patuxent Stewards, Patuxent National Visitors Center and Research Refuge

The National Wildlife Visitor Center, located between Washington, DC and Baltimore, Maryland, is designed to accommodate one million visitors per year. This unique facility seeks to impart increased knowledge of and appreciation for the earth's vital resources. Interactive exhibits highlight each of the major ecosystems of the United States with integrating themes including global environmental issues, migratory bird studies, habitats, endangered species, creature life cycles and the research tools and techniques used by scientists.

For the school year 2002-2003, the Patuxent Stewards' will include two public schools in the greater Washington D.C./Baltimore metropolitan area. Annually, the education staff at Patuxent Research Refuge provides summer and fall in-service workshops that cover introduction to using the visitors center and refuge property as well as curriculum from Project WET and WILD.

An active volunteer group, called the Friends of Patuxent, have created student curriculum guides that correspond to exhibits and are aligned with the Maryland State Standards.
