Ardhi Vilinda Youth Program at Mountain Longleaf NWR, Alabama

The Brownfield Institute and its partners Mountain Longleaf NWR, Jacksonville State University, Anniston Museum of Natural History and Cobb Elementary School have established the Ardhi (Swahili for Earth) Vilinda (Swahili for Watchman) Youth Project. The AVYP will eventually provide disadvantaged youth 1st - 12 grades access to opportunities to explore their natural world through environmental, ecological, conservation and nature related educational programs utilizing the combined resources of Mountain Longleaf NWR and Anniston Museum of Natural History.

In its pilot year, the AVYP will engage elementary aged youth through outdoor classrooms and field schools to expand their knowledge of nature, natural science, conservation and environmental issues in order to develop environmental stewards for Mountain Longleaf NWR and their community.
