Wetland Education Ventures at Cypress Creek NWR, Illinois
The land for learning Institute is partnering with local schools, Cypress Creek NWR and Touch of Nature Environmental Education Center to implement a series of outdoor wetland education programs. These program will include: six full-day field trips canoeing on the Lower Cache River in southern Illinois and biotic investigations of restored wetland sites on the refuge; a one-day teacher in-service; and two stewardship project days. This three-step approach will allow participants to understand the importance and value of our wetland ecosystems and will be empowered to become actively involved in restoration and informed land-use practices in the region.
Located within Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge, the Cache River basin of southernmost Illinois makes up 91% of the state's high-quality wetlands. Since the early 1900's the natural character and quality of the Cache River basin has been altered by the clearing of timber, draining of wetlands, stream canalization, and denuded riparian zones. Through this program, students and teachers will have the support and education foundation for taking an active role in conservation and restoration in and around the Cache River.
