Island of Science on the Rio Grande at Bosque del Apache NWR, New Mexico

Acting on the belief that every child living in the shadow of the Bosque del Apache NWR (BdA NWR) should have an opportunity to experience the refuge and learn about the sciences necessary to operate, manage and maintain a portion of our national heritage, a New Mexico curriculum based educational outreach program has been developed to teach hands-on field science technology to 4th and 5th grade students using the BdA NWR as the outdoor classroom, as well as aiding, assisting, and empowering the classroom educators to teacher science technology.

Bosque del Apache NWR will be used as a classroom enabling students to explore important issues involved in living in the Rio Grande rift zone. For example students may explore: water use for wildlife, vegetation, and farming; endangered (Mexican Gray Wolf/Silvery Minnow) and invasive species (Russian Olive/Salt Cedar); and use of the land through conservation (moist soil management and Cottonwood regeneration stands).

Island of Science on the Rio Grande is an innovative program that seeks to involve the community with the NWR by equipping youth with science technology techniques that will enhance classroom learning, increase national testing outcomes, and provide the building blocks for individual future success in a world driven by technology.
