Events honoring the National Wildlife Refuge System Centennial
began March 13th in coastal Sebastian, Florida. Challenger, a rehabilitated
eagle, opened the ceremonies dedicating a time capsule containing
items from many of the 540 refuges scattered across the country.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Steve Williams unveiled
the exhibit and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fish, Wildlife and Park
David P. Smith offered keynote remarks. The famed Orlando Peabody
Ducks were also on hand to waddle through the delighted crowd. Official
ceremonies continue through March 14.
