Discover a turkey outside of the family oven this holiday season during the historic Christmas Bird Count(CBC) December 14-January 5, 2013. There is likely a wildlife refuge near you that is participating in a CBC Circle.
The citizen science project is more than 100 years old and sponsored by the National Audubon Society. Each “Count Circle” is focused on a geographic area.
Some refuges are connecting kids with nature by offering a special CBC for families, appropriately named CBC4kids.
Last year, large numbers of snowy owls (as in Harry Potter) were spotted at Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge in Montana. The Bolivar Peninsula Christmas Bird Count, including Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge in south Texas, was in the top 20 nationwide for the total number of species counted.
