National Wildlife Refuge Week is a great time to explore John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, the largest urban wildlife refuge in the country. Encompassing nearly 1,000 acres of wetlands, woods, fields, and creek habitat, Heinz Refuge provides important natural resources for more than 300 bird species, and myriad mammal, snake, turtle, butterfly and human communities!
Join our free, guided nature walk at 9:00 am to see and learn about how refuges work for you and wildlife while walking in our urban oasis in southwest Philadelphia.
Stop by the BIG SIT anytime from sunrise to sunset, at the Heinz Refuge Observation Tower, to help count bird species from this picturesque location, and support the Friends of Heinz Refuge. www.FriendsofHeinzRefuge.org. Bring binoculars or borrow from the Visitors Center.
Bring your 8-12 olds to a Family Nature Explorers program about National Wildlife Refuges.
The walk lasts 2-3 hours and is weather dependent. If you don't have binoculars, borrow a pair when you meet the group in the visitor center.
