May 18: What's All the Buzz About? - 7 pm, at Refuge Visitor Center. Matt McKinney, a Masters Degree student in entomology at West Virginia University, will present a broad overview of bee biology and talk specifically about his research. Other topics to be addressed include the evolutionary origins of bees, bee taxonomy, the importance of bees, bee life history, common bees in West Virginia (with a focus on the Canaan Valley), and collecting bees for science. The program will wrap up with some outdoor collecting demonstrations and hands-on activities. Matt will let you know how volunteers can contribute to the West Virginia Bee Database.
