Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge |
| Event Description: |
We will be celebrating our Refuge history! Before the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge became a refuge, it was a military base reserved to protect the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. One of our WWII bunkers will again be home to a 16" gun, just like one that was here in the 1940's. Join us as we welcome back this piece of history with a ribbon cutting ceremony! Come see this giant gun barrel -- 68-feet long, 120 tons -- this barrel stood guard on the USS Missouri as the Japanese surrendered at the end of WWII. |
