Since acquisition in 1995, the Horseshoe Bend Division is gradually changing from a collection of agricultural fields to a diverse mosiac of grasslands, wet meadows and wetlands. The Division is recognized as one of the largest blocks of grassland/ wet meadow habitat in the Upper Mississippi River Basin and supports a wide array of grassland birds. An aggressive invasion of reed canarygrass has been rapidly spreading within this Division and represents a serious threat to creating and sustaining the diverse, high quality habitat we want to achieve. This project entails intensive containment efforts within grassland/ wet meadow natural regeneration areas and eradication efforts within a restored wetland area. Combined treatments of burning, mowing and glyphosate spraying are implemented on 220 infested acres during 2005 and 2006. To inventory and monitor control success of reed canarygrass, GPS distribution mapping is also completed on the Division and on adjacent private land utilizing community college, high school, and conservation group volunteers.

With the late arrival in FY 2005 of grant funds and the long turn-around time to obtain the GPS unit, the volunteer component of our project has been delayed until the second year (2006). Our primary emphasis in 2005 was to contact teachers and professors to organize a student volunteer program to provide training and experience in GPS mapping and how to monitor invasive species. We had two Nature Conservancy interns as volunteers collecting cover and frequency data on 80 permanent vegetation plots and taking photopoints. Two other interested individuals also volunteered in helping with the baseline distribution mapping completed in 2005.

Contacts were made with area 1)community colleges which have agriculture, conservation and horticulture programs; 2) Augustana College biology and environmental studies departments; 3)high school science, computer and agriculture teachers; and 4) FFA and 4H groups.


PROJECT RESULTS

Project Results:
Give an overview of the results of the project. Include quantifiable measure of success, such as maps produced, efficacy of control measures, number of sites where invasions were detected early and responded to, number of community contacts, etc. (Up to 250 words).
Baseline distribution map produced for 750 acre inventory area. Baseline photopoints taken to document infestation condition in 10 leading edge locations. Cover and frequency sampling conducted on 80 permanent vegetation plots to compare past with current level of infestation and to document baseline condition prior to project treatment. New invading patches of canarygrass on the leading edge of the largest infestation area were identified and treated with Round-up after spring burning (140 acres). Canarygrass just beginning to establish in a restored wetland area were detected and treated with Round-up (10 acres). Contacts initiated to set up student volunteer program with community colleges in Burlington and Muscatine, Augustana College in Rock Island, and high schools in Wapello and Muscatine. Contact established and discussions held regarding potential canarygrass treatment partnership with lease farmer on private land adjacent to Refuge.
