Volunteers are responsible for informing visitors about Monomoy, directing them to our self-guided walk, and answering any questions they may have about the refuge, displays in the center, or Chatham in general. Volunteers also make sales in the friends of Monomoy bookstore and answer any phone calls for the center. Our typical volunteer involvement includes either a 10:00am-2:00pm or 2:00pm-6:00pm shift at the visitor center. Volunteers can come in as often as they’d like, the more the better!   • Volunteer for National Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 26th at 8am-5pm: Join Refuge staff to conduct hiking trail maintenance, landscaping, beach debris cleanup, and other tasks while learning about the amazing wildlife and habitats of Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge.Tasks may include clearing vegetation, debris, and/or trash, carrying materials, trail clearing and/or light maintenance. Work may be conducted in extreme heat or cold.Potential hazards may include injuries sustained from working with hand tools, carrying moderate weight, working in varied terrain, transit by boat, dense brush, thorns, poison ivy, and/or ticks.



The refuge typically has a variety of internship opportunities each summer ranging from biology and invasive species work to interpretation and education. Announcements are posted in November each year and the application period usually closes by the following February. Internships are a great way to experience what it is like to work on public lands and make a contribution to natural resource conservation.
