Seasons of Wildlife

Between the Leslie Canyon and nearby San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuges, at least 334 bird species have been recorded, including many nesting birds. In addition, 67 mammal, 43 reptile, 13 amphibian, and eight fish species have been documented. The two refuges are critical in maintaining a sanctuary for at least 34 plant and wildlife species of concern.

Featured Species

The Yaqui chub (Gila purpurea) lives in the ponds of Leslie Canyon and San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuges. It is has gone extinct in its wild habitat, however some populations exist in both refuges as a result of reintroduction and conservation efforts. 

The Yaqui topminnow (Poeciliopsis occidentalis sonoriensis) lives in streams, springs, and cienegas below an elevation of 4,500 feet. It currently lives in many areas throughout the San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge, though some introduced populations also live in Leslie Canyon National Wildlife Refuge.
