Picnicking

Picnicking is free at all general locations and picnic areas are open during daylight hours. 

The are a wide variety of picnic areas located throughout the refuge for free which are open during daylight hours.  Boulder Cabin can be rented for private group picnicking.

Mt. Scott Picnic Area is located directly south of Mt. Scott and west of Lake Elmer Thomas. Lost Lake and Boulder Picnic Areas are centrally located approximately half-way between Refuge Headquarters and Doris Campground. Sunset Picnic Area is located on the west end of the refuge at the base of Elk Mountain.

Road signs throughout the refuge will direct you to these picnic areas. Fire rings and grills are available but for your safety and that of others, please check current Fire Danger Ratings at the refuge gates or the Current Events page to determine use regulations. Trash dumpsters and restrooms are available at all picnic areas. See the refuge map for more information.

Picnicking on the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge should be limited to these provided areas. All refuge regulations apply.


Boulder Cabin
Reservations for Boulder Cabin Picnicking Area will be taken 3 months in advance and can be made by contacting Refuge Headquarters. Boulder has one group picnic site with a shelter and is available for day-use only. Capacity for the site is a minimum of 20 people and a maximum of 60 people, with a responsible adult 18 years or older accompanying each group. There is a $5 fee for renting Boulder Cabin. All refuge regulations apply. Contact Refuge Headquarters for reservations.
