To help meet the primary Refuge purpose of providing "an inviolate sanctuary... for migratory birds," Batchtown, Portage Island, Gilbert Lake and most of the Calhoun division are closed from Oct. 16- Dec. 31.
When the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers are frozen or in times of high water the ferries may close. To check the status of the Illinois Department of Transportation ferries (Brussels and Kampsville) go to http://www.idot.illinois.gov/home/Comm/emergency-road-closures. Management efforts of the US Fish and Wildlife Service have brought this majestic bird back from the brink of extinction. Bald eagles can been seen in winter at Two Rivers NWR and through out the confluence area.
