A special use permit is required for certain activities that occur on the refuge.

To participate in the waterfowl hunting program at the Great Meadows Unit (September to March), hunters should call the Visitor Services Manager at 860-399-2513 to obtain the application for a free permit.

Overnight environmental education programs also occur on the refuge. These are curriculum-based programs, typically lead by scout troops and others, where overnight stays are allowed to accommodate the group’s desire to conduct lessons and observe wildlife in the evenings and early mornings. Approval for these programs, and a free permit, may be obtained from the Visitor Services Manager.
