For EducatorsThe Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge is an astonishing place for children of all ages to enjoy, with an assortment of activities such as the visitor center (open year-round) to the auto tour route (open seasonally).

Visitor's Center

There is a lot of cool stuff to check out at Sand Lake! Stop by the refuge headquarters to take a look around the visitor's center. The visitor's center is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday (excluding Federal holidays) and is full of Sand Lake wildlife mounts for you to see up close.

Explorer Backpack

These fun filled backpacks can be checked out at the refuge visitor center. Each backpack contains a variety of field guides, binoculars, and equipment used to look closely at small creatures. An ID is required to check out an explorer backpack.

The refuge also has recreation areas where you can have a picnic, go on a nature walk, look for wildlife, take some photos, and just enjoy the outdoors! Check out our Visit page or contact the Sand Lake refuge office for more information.
