River Partners Restoration Project
River Partners is restoring 55 acres of riparian habitat at the western terminus of the Otay River watershed on the San Diego Bay NWR, South San Diego Bay Unit. The project is partnership between River Partners (a 501(c)3 non-profit) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and is being funded by several partners.

Otay River Estuary Restoration Project
This restoration project was proposed by the refuge in 2011 to restore about 70 acres of coastal wetlands. The project is now able to be funded by the Poseidon Resources Carlsbad Desalination Project, in order to fulfill part of their mitigation requirement.

What We Do

Belding's Savannah Sparrow

Belding's savannah sparrow is a State and Federally protected bird. It is a rare subspecies of the Savannah sparrow, however it is common on the marshes of San Diego Bay, and the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge. It is distinguished from the Savannah sparrow by having heavier and darker streaking, and a smaller beak profile.
