12th Annual Kids Fishing DaySaturday June 8, 2013
Saturday June 8, 2013 - 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Wilna Pond
On Saturday, June 8, Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge and the Rappahannock Wildlife Refuge Friends Group will sponsor the 12th annual Kids’ Fishing Day. The day will begin at 9 a.m. with a free fishing clinic after which the kids will put their new skills to the test at the Fishing Derby at Wilna pond from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
What does the clinic entail?
The clinic will offer fun activities where kids can learn to identify fish and their habitat, knot tying skills, casting techniques, and water safety.
What is the cost?
Do kids need to bring their own gear?
No, the refuge will provide poles, tackle and bait for participants. If they have their own, they’re welcome to bring it.
Will there be anything going on besides fishing?
Yes, in addition to the fishing, the day will include lunch (grilled hotdogs), prize drawings, goodie bags full of giveaways, and fun contests (biggest fish, smallest fish, weirdest fish, etc.). We have some great prizes to giveaway to participants! Each child who catches a fish will receive a picture of themselves with it.
How do parents get their children involved as participants?
Parents need to pre-register their kids by calling our office at 804-333-1470 by May 31. We have a limited number of spaces and in previous years have filled up. We’ve already started receiving registrations so call today!
Are participants usually successful/how good is the fishing?
Participants have great success! Wilna Pond offers great fishing of bass, blue gill, and crappie. We’ve been hearing from folks this spring that there are some big ones out there!
This is a great opportunity for families to get outdoors and just have fun! Hope to see you there!
