Join refuge volunteers as we work on seasonal projects to restore and reconstruct our native tallgrass prairie and oak savanna ecosystems!
During winter months, visitors of all ages are invited to use the Refuge's adult and child size snowshoes for free, and join a ranger for a fun snowshoe hike! A minimum of 4" of snow on the trail is required to use snowshoes; if there is not enough snow, a hike on foot will still occur. Come dressed for the weather! Pre-register by contacting Megan Wandag at email@example.com or 515-994-3400.
Please join us in helping collect important data about birds at Neal Smith NWR, as well as nationwide data, by participating in Audubon's annual bird count. Every year, thousands of people participate in Audubon's Christmas Bird Count. The data collected from these counts is used by scientists to study the health of bird populations. A FREE lunch will be provided by the Friends of NSNWR. Pre-registration is required by December 31, 2014; contact Karen Viste-Sparkman by email or phone at 515-994-3400 to sign up.
