      Children ages 3-5 are invited to bring their favorite adult and join us as we learn about what prairie animals eat! We will read stories, go outside, make nature crafts, and much more.     • Annual Butterfly Count - July 12

      Red Admiral Butterfly

      Volunteer to help us monitor and count butterfly species along the Overlook and Tallgrass Trails.  All experience levels and ages are invited.Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge would love for you and your family to join us for our annual butterfly count.  Come learn about butterflies and discover their intricate differences as a naturalist guides you through the tallgrass prairie.  We will record the species and numbers of butterflies identified, and we will use this information to help track butterfly populations on the refuge.  Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are welcome to participate.  Sign up by calling 515-994-3400 or emailing Megan at megan_wandag@fws.gov.  Meet at the Prairie Learning and Visitor Center, and be prepared to be outdoors for 2 hours.
