Marsh Fires

Most wildfires on the McFaddin Refuge are the result of lightning. When burned, the marsh habitat creates large, billowing smoke clouds.

Federal wildland firefighters work closely with refuge managers to utilize fire for the benefit of the marsh. Prescribed burns are done under strictly controlled conditions.

Firefighters use the roadways, bayous and other waterways to create natural barriers and keep fires from spreading.

After the marsh has burned, the charred vegetation is absorbed into the soil and provides nutrients for new plants to begin growing. In addition, the fire undermines the ability of invasive and exotic plants to take over the coastal landscape.

Blue Crab

Blue crab are bottom-dwellers and can be found in every type of habitat in the Gulf of Mexico -- from back bays and estuaries to the saltiest and deepest of waters, they thrive in the low tide line or at depths of 120 feet. Throughout the various stages of their lives, they are an important food source for many species, including humans.
