  • Hunting

    Hunting

Hunting is available on all but two of the 56 Waterfowl Production Areas. Hunting is not allowed at Blue Wing in Ozaukee County and Wilcox in Waushara County. Hunters must have a license from the State. All state and federal hunting regulations apply. Hunting migratory waterfowl requires a Duck Stamp. Non-toxic shot is required for all types of hunting, but does not apply to use of rifle bullets or shotgun slugs. See Rules and Regulations section for more information.

  • Fishing

Although fishing is allowed on all 56 Waterfowl Production Areas, there is limited success because most of the District’s shallow wetlands freeze over the winter, so few fish species live in the wetlands. State licenses are required. See Rules and Regulations section for more information.

  • Wildlife Viewing

All Waterfowl Production Areas are open to wildlife observation, hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, nature study, and photography. Parking lots, trails and kiosks with maps and information are located at five Waterfowl Productions Areas: Becker, Baraboo River and Schoenberg Marsh (Columbia County), Fairfield Marsh (Sauk County) and Uihlein (Winnebago County). The Waterfowl Production Areas are home to a diversity of wildlife, and most are best seen early morning or late afternoon by quiet observation.

Photographers who don't wish to get off the beaten path have good walking access and/or trails at Uihlein Waterfowl Production Area and Schoenberg Waterfowl Production Area.
