Chafee National Wildlife Refuge - USFWS.

Points of Interest

The kayak launch area at Sprague Bridge off of Boston Neck Road/Rt. 1A in Narragansett (along with a few other shoreline access points) is open to the public every day from sunrise until sunset. There are no other developed visitor use areas on the refuge. The kayak launch area is not accessible by wheelchair or stroller.

Know Before You Go

In order to ensure that wildlife needs come first, existing refuge lands and waters are closed to public uses until a compatibility determination is completed and they are specifically opened.  Please be sure to consult all refuge-specific regulations regarding approved wildlife-dependent recreational activities before your visit.

Pets are not allowed on the refuge.

To assist in preparing for a pleasant experience while visiting, we would like to share the following helpful health hints:

  • Dress for the weather.
  • Insect repellent is recommended. We do have deer ticks but you will rarely be exposed to their habitat on the trail.
  • Poison Ivy is common on the refuge. All parts of the plant can cause a rash during any season.
  • Bring water and drink plenty of it while engaging in activities on the refuge.
  • Be sure to use sun protection and to not over-exert yourself.
