The Visitor Center is located at 6465 Refuge Road. It is open from 7:30am to 4:00pm, Monday through Friday; Saturday 9:00am-4:00pm; Sunday 1:00-5:00pm; and closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

Refuge volunteers and staff are available to provide you with maps, brochures, and checklists and let you know what's happening on the refuge. Exhibits highlighting Refuge wildlife and habitats, migratory birds, and the former town of Hagerman are located inside.

The 4-mile Wildlife Drive located near the Visitor Center crosses the Refuge at the south end of the lake.  Interpretive signs along the route provide information on various types of wildlife and habitat that can be seen along the way.

The Refuge has three Day Use Areas that provide picnic tables and restrooms – Goode, Big Mineral and Sandy Day Use Areas. Bank-fishing is available in all three areas and the Goode and Big Mineral Areas also have hiking trails.

An informational kiosk is located near the driveway to the Visitor Center on Refuge Road. Refuge maps and information are available here for those who arrive when the Visitor Center is closed.
