Although they are most active at night, it is not uncommon to see bobcats crossing the road in forested areas during the day.

Coyotes have adapted well to changing landscapes and can be found throughout North America, including Refuge farm fields.

The very clever raccoon uses its front paws and long fingers to find and feast on many different things such as bird or reptile eggs, mice, insects, and even human trash.

White-tailed deer bucks shed and re-grow their antlers every year. With good forage available, the antlers usually increase in size each year.

Deer can often be seen at dusk and dawn feeding in refuge fields. On hot summer days, they rest in the cool shade of wooded forests.

One or two endangered whooping cranes sometimes stop at Hagerman NWR during their fall migration to Aransas NWR on the Texas coast.

Look for colorful wood ducks in wet forested areas such as near the west end of Meadow Pond Trail.
