Note: For canoe, kayak, and small vessel access, you must enter the refuge from the east, via the Dismal Swamp Canal to the Feeder Ditch to Lake Drummond. Recommended water access is at the Chesapeake Dismal Swamp Public Boat Ramp. From U.S. Highway 17 in southern Chesapeake, exit at Ballahack Road. Continue west on Ballahack Road to reach the DS Canal Trail Road. The boat ramp is just north of this intersection. (GPS: N 36.604328 W -76.381378)

An active fire management program is housed on the refuge. Seasonal activities include the planning and implementation of controlled burns, and wildfire suppression. The zone program conducts burns 9 months a year, and averages 35 burn days a year. Burns are conducted in a wide range of habitat types, including marsh, grasslands, pocosins, and upland pine and hardwood forest.
