The refuge is open every day of the year from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset.
Pets must be on a leash, not left unattended, and are restricted to designated pedestrian routes except when used for hunting in accordance with refuge regulations.
Persons possessing, transporting or carrying firearms on national wildlife refuges must comply with all provisions of state and local law. Persons may only use (discharge) firearms in accordance with refuge regulations (50 CFR 27.42 and specific refuge regulations in 50 CFR part 32). Firearms are not allowed in any federal buildings.

A patchwork of 23 wetland types, including bogs, shrub swamps and wet meadows carpet the valley floor. At about 8,500 acres, this is the largest wetland complex in the state of West Virginia, and is a regionally significant wetland complex within the southern Appalachians.
