The following are some of the recent research projects conducted on the Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge. • Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) Program: Continent-wide Demographic Monitoring, in conjunction with the Institute for Bird Populations. • New Mexico Mourning Dove Banding, in conjunction with New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.

More than 100 species of dragonflies and damselflies (Odonates) have been documented on Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is home to what is considered one of the most diverse populations of odonates in North America.
