The lesser yellowlegs is a slender, long-legged shorebird that readily shows off the brightly colored legs that give it its name.

Eastern meadowlarks walk on the ground, often concealed by grasses or crops. Males sing beautiful, flutelike songs from exposed perches, particularly fenceposts. Their flight is a distinctive sequence of rapid fluttering and short glides, usually low to the ground.

The greater roadrunner can reach running speeds of 18.6 mi/hr. It holds its head and tail flat and parallel to the ground when running at its top speed. The roadrunner eats many venomous prey items, including scorpions, spiders, and rattlesnakes.

The name "Pyrrhuloxia" is a combination of the genus names Pyrrhula (bullfinches) and Loxia (crossbills). The roots mean "flame-colored" and "crooked," and aptly describe the reddish bird with the crooked bill. Foraging winter flocks of pyrrhuloxias may number as many as 1,000 birds.

The burrowing owl is unlike most owls in that the female is larger than the male. It catches food with their feet. They hunt by walking, hopping, or running along the ground, or by flying from a perch.
