Come Prepared

Sign_512x219Please keep the following in mind when planning your trip to Aransas National Wildlife Refuge.

  • Fuel is not available at the refuge. Tivoli (14 miles) is the nearest town for fuel.
  • Find the nearest camping options here.
  • The refuge is home to alligators and poisonous snakes so please always watch your step.
  • Dress appropriately. Bring a hat, water, sunscreen, insect repellent, field guides, binoculars, camera, etc. If you forget, the Friends of Aransas & Matagorda Island National Wildlife Refuge operates a nature store in the visitor center where you will find water, drinks, chips, candy, and nuts along with bird books, and T-shirts for your convenience.
  • No binoculars or field guide? No problem! Eagle Optics has generously donated binoculars and the Friends of Aransas & Matagorda Island have donated field guides for visitors to use. You can pick them up at the visitor center but you must leave your driver’s license and return the binoculars by 4pm.
  • We have so many birds because we have so many mosquitoes!  Remember to bring your bug spray.
  • The refuge is truly wild and cell phones might not work.
  • If you have a serious health-related emergency try to call 911 first and if possible notify staff at the visitor center. The refuge has a first aid kit, wheelchair, and AED unit for emergencies.
