Waterfowl Production Areas

Sixty Waterfowl Production Areas exist within the Rainwater Basin Area.  These areas are managed primarily for migratory waterfowl.  Annual management on each tract varies, depending on the vegetative cover and water level conditions in wetlands.  During dry conditions, more opportunities for grazing, hydrologic restoration, and prescribed fire exist.  The table below lists each area and its acreage of habitat.  Information about various wetlands can be found by clicking on specific hyperlinks.

Waterfowl Production Areas were purchased with Duck Stamp money and are open to hunting, trapping, photography, nature study, wildlife watching, and environmental education.  The areas, however, do not contain developed visitor facilities.

The section "Public Use Regulations" describes in detail the types of public use allowed on Waterfowl Production Areas.

State owned wetlands are called Wildlife Management Areas.  For more information about these areas can be found at Nebraska Game and Parks'  interactive map.
