vertical rule Species
A broad and exciting array of wildlife
inhabits the coastal areas of
Southern New England and the New York Bight.

With awareness and dedication we can help protect these species and their habitats, and ensure that they'll have an enduring place on the land, in the sea, and across the sky.  We must combine our resources.  We must work together.  That is the spirit of the Coastal Program.

Species Groups:
Fisheries
Seabirds
Shorebirds
Waterfowl
Coastal Colonial Waterbirds

Endangered and Threatened (Listed) Species
One of the responsibilities of the Coastal Program is to help protect and recover those plant and animal species that are listed as threatened or endangered

Endangered Species Act:
The purposes of the Endangered Species Act are to

· conserve endangered species or threatened species,
· conserve the ecosystems upon which they depend, and
· take steps toward species recovery.
Definition:
The Act defines an endangered species as one in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range. A threatened species is any species likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range.

The Act requires that listing decisions be based on the best scientific and commercial data available, without regard to possible economic or other impacts of such determinations.
