In his book, Tim Gallagher, editor of Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Living Bird magazine, gives a fascinating account of the events and the search leading up to the 2005 announcement and he also provides information about the history and the conservation issues related to the ivory-billed woodpecker and its habitat. | Saturday, Jan 27

Encounters with the Archdruid by John McPhee
This book powerfully details the "encounters" between David Brower who was the executive director of the Sierra Club from 1952 ?1969, and three of his opponents: a mineral engineer, a land developer, and the Commissioner of the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation who proposed damming the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. These extraordinary encounters take place on a hiking trip in the Glacial Peak Wilderness Area in Washington, while camping on an island off the coast of Georgia, and on a white-water rafting trip on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. |

Lost Mountain: A Year in the Vanishing Wilderness by Erik Reece
Erik Reece spent one year observing and writing about the radical strip-mining of coal ("mountaintop removal") from an Appalachian mountain. Lost Mountain is his compelling chronicle of that year in Eastern Kentucky. In his book, he also details the devastating history and effects of this type of mining upon the environment and the people of the region, and he includes proposals for alleviating the environmental toll. |

An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore
The topic of global warming has received much attention and Al Gore's book presents the clear case for the existence of global warming through narratives and images. The book balances a portrayal of the dire environmental impact with discussions of policy changes and individual actions to effectively reduce global warming. |
