Non-tidal marshes are typically freshwater and are not affected by the rise and fall of the ocean tide. The inflow of water comes from ground water, streams, lakes, or rivers. They are the most common type of wetland in North America. The most common types of plants found in a marsh are cattail, ferns, smartweed, sedges, jewelweed, and duckweed. Look for red-winged blackbirds, muskrat, northern harriers, black terns, painted turtles and bullfrogs in northern freshwater marshes.
