Fens

EPA Photo

A fen has an underlying layer of peat covered with many species of mosses and water loving plants (aquatic macrophytes). It is fed by mineral rich groundwater providing plants and animals with a nutrient rich environment. It looks similar to a bog but is alkaline not acidic and has a much higher nutrient content. Lady slipper is a beautiful flower that often grows in a fen along with cotton grass and willowswater.
