French Guiana, with its capital Cayenne, is located in northern South America
and borders the north Atlantic Ocean. The total area of the country is 91,000
sq. km. and is compared to being slightly smaller than Indiana. Its tropical
climate is hot, humid, and has little seasonal temperature variation. The
country's terrain consists of low-lying coastal plains and rising hills to
small mountains upland. Some of the natural resources include: bauxite,
timber, gold (widely scattered), cinnabar, kaolin, and fish.
In July 2001, the population size of this French speaking country was estimated at 177,562. Some of their industries include: construction, shrimp processing, forestry products, rum, and gold mining. Their agricultural products consist of: rice, manioc (tapioca), sugar, cocoa, vegetables, bananas, cattle, pigs, and poultry.
