Colombia, with its capital Bogot , is located in northern South America
bordering the Caribbean Sea; between Panama and Venezuela, and bordering the
north Pacific Ocean; between Ecuador and Panama. The total area is 1,138,910
sq. km. and is compared to being slightly less than three times the size of
Montana. The climate is tropical along the coast and eastern plains and is
cooler in the highlands. The terrain has flat coastal lowlands, central
highlands, (Andes Mountains), and eastern lowland plains. Some of their
natural resources include: petroleum, natural gas, coal, iron ore, nickel,
gold, copper, emeralds, and hydropower. Their current environmental issues
are: deforestation, soil damage from overuse of pesticides, and air pollution
(especially in Bogot from vehicle emissions).
In July 2001, the population size was estimated at 40,349,388. The official language is Spanish. Some of their industries include: textiles, food processing, oil, clothing and footwear, beverages, chemicals, cement, gold, coal, and emeralds. Their agriculture products include: coffee, cut flowers, bananas, rice, tobacco, corn, sugarcane, cocoa beans, oilseed, vegetables, forest products, and shrimp.
