Water Chestnut

In partnership with The Nature Conservancy, the Lake Champlain Basin Program, and two private foundations, the Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program was involved with a large scale project to eliminate water chestnut infestations from Lake Champlain wetlands using volunteers to hand-pull plants.

Approximately 535 wetland acres at 11 different sites have been treated since 1998 and now only need monitoring to make sure that this invasive annual plant does not reappear. It is hoped that when combined with mechanical harvesting efforts that water chestnut can be eliminated from the watershed.
