Abstract:
Buffer areas around all streams in Maine. This streams buffer data is a part of a group of datasets developed to show areas around water bodies and wetlands that correspond approximately to state shoreland zoning standards. These buffers were developed from USGS 1:24000 data provided by the Maine Office of GIS. All buffer areas extend 75 feet from USGS 1:24000 stream centerlines.
Purpose:
This stream buffer data is part of a group of datasets developed as part of the Beginning with Habitat outreach project, a cooperative effort of The Maine Department of Conservation, The Maine Natural Areas Program, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and other government and non-profit agencies in Maine. This stream buffer data, along with datasets of buffers around ponds and lakes that are at least 10 acres in size, wetlands that are at least 10 acres in size, rivers, and coastal waters are designed to illustrate the importance of riparian habitat in landscape-level planning for biodiversity at the town and multi-town level. Maps produced from this data are presented to municipalities and land trusts in an effort to encourage open-space planning efforts that include a vision for the preservation of biodiversity.

These data represent an overestimate of Maine state standards for shoreland zoning around streams. These data represent 75 foot buffers around ALL streams mapped on USGS 1:24000 Quadrangle maps. Maine State shoreland zoning standards cover 75 foot buffers around only certain, higher order streams.

These data are for planning purposes only and should not be used as a statutory representation of the resource.

It is important to note that these buffer areas are only as complete as the USGS 1:24000 stream data. The quality, completeness, and date of capture of this stream data vary by USGS 1:24000 quadrangle map.

All streams were extracted from the Maine Office of GIS 1:24,000 Library of Data and buffered 75 feet using the ArcInfo 8.1 buffer command. A shapefile was created from the resulting ArcInfo coverage that represented the buffer areas only (Inside = 100).
