Deer Wintering Areas (LURC) (lurcdwa2001 polygon coverage)

Mapped and regulated deer wintering areas in un-organized towns.  Coverage of the Land Use Regulation Commission's Protected Fish and Wildlife Habitats.  This coverage was originally mapped at a scale of 1:62500 by LURC on officially adopted zoning maps and was remapped to the present scale of 1:24000 by MDIFW.  Boundaries are being further redefined by LURC and must be submitted for rulemaking before being officially adopted by LURC as a P-FW (protection zone-fish and wildlife).

Deer Wintering Areas (NRPA) (dwa-nrpa.shp polygon shapefile)

Mapped deer wintering areas (DWAs), rated high, moderate or indeterminant, in organized towns statewide (see Deer Wintering Area and Travel Corridor document, MDIFW, 12/22/99).  DWAs were mapped by regional biologists and were then transferred to mylar 7.5 minute quads for digitizing.

RATING

Deer wintering areas are evaluated based on three criteria: 1) quality of softwood shelter, 2) intensity of deer use, and 3) size.  The final rating of the DWA is determined by summing the scores for the three criteria and assigning a rating as follows: high (score of 10-12), moderate (score of 7-9.9) or low (score of 0-6.9).

IDENTIFIER

Unique numeric identifier for each deer wintering area (999 = internal polygon not included in DWA)
