Description:
Abstract:
This coverage contains occurrence data for American black
duck, American bittern, common snipe, pied-billed grebe,
and wood duck for 1998, 1999, and 2000. The data was
collected by field technicians for Maine Dept. of Inland
Fisheries and Wildlife, either on foot or by canoe.
Locations digitized for the sites-stops were automated from
documents provided by Tom Hodgman. In most cases these were
photocopies of paper maps, on which the points were noted.
In some cases the points were digitized based on handdrawn
diagrams of the site or the stream on the field data forms.
Data points were supposed to be 250-300 m apart, but
distances were approximated by the technicians and GPS
units were not used for the surveys in 1998, 1999 or 2000. Some stations were as
close as 80 meters apart.
Purpose:
This information was automated for use in building and
testing habitat models as part of the Gulf of Maine Habitat
Mapping Project.
Supplemental_Information:
The automated data represents a season-total for each
species at the site-stop. Some data was dropped since it
was associated with the site but not tied to any stop,
i.e., if the observer heard a bird while untying the canoe
from the truck at the parking lot.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Locations are based on notes made on topographic maps, of
either 1:24000 scale, or simple diagrams on field data
sheets. Data points were intended to be 250-300 m apart,
but since locations were estimated, this may vary. Data was
subsequently automated by visually placing the locations on
digital images of topographic maps, or using background
data for wetlands (National Wetlands Inventory data,
1:24000 scale), streams and ponds (U.S.Geological Survey,
1:24000 scale), and roads (U.S. Geological Survey and Maine
Dept. of Transportation,1:24000 scale). Differences between
these visual reference data sources may reflect water level
fluctuation, as well as differences in production and automation.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The data was reviewed for accuracy during the automation process.
Completeness_Report:
The data is complete for the five species, the sites and
stops identified, for 1998, 1999, and 2000.
