The Gulf of Maine Habitat Mapping Project used occurrence information and species/habitat models to map potential
habitat for 63 species of primary concern to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. These include migratory birds,
anadromous and estuarine fishes, and threatened or endangered species. The habitat models are based on
published literature, agency reports, and knowledge of experts working with the species.

Abstract:
This coverage combines modeled habitat for three life stages (juveniles/subadults, and adults) of
horseshoe crabs in a single map. For details see the model narrative horseshoe_crab_model.htm
Purpose:
The purpose of this project was to identify valuable areas for conservation,
protection and enhancement of plant, fish and wildlife habitat.
Supplemental_Information:
Depth Suitability: Only intertidal depths were considered suitable for breeding; intertidal to -12' was regarded as
suitable for juveniles. Only waters to -99' were scored as suitable adult non-breeding habitat. Salinity Suitability:
all areas > 6 ppt were regarded as suitable. Proximity of juvenile to breeding habitats: juvenile habitat was
mapped only within a half-mile radius of suitable breeding habitat. Wave energy/wind fetch: Breeding beaches
must be relatively protected from wave action. Suitable conditions were identified as those having wind fetch
